I started my working life as a marine engineer. Then as a designer of machines, before becoming a teacher. Finally at the ripe old age of 40 I did my Ph.D.
This of course changed my life and I can say with all the ups and downs its never been dull.
I enjoy lecturing; but on personal note the best part is the session at the end when people come to talk and handle the objects I use in my lecture.
The informality of the occasions often is a time when new ideas are formed and new alliances started.
I have had several people who I have taught forge work and metal work too and it is always a pleasure to be able to pass on the skills I have learned to others.
Working as an experimental archaeologist has taken me down roads and to places I never knew existed.
I have met fascinating people and become friends with many of them.
I hope in this web site I can give you a glimpse into my world, I hope you enjoy what you see.

Tell me what is the difference between Pankration and Roman martial arts? What did you think of the fight scenes in the movie “Gladiator”?
I dont know what Pankration is!
The film is very entertaining the fight scenes are good stage fighting.
I am sorry I have failed to contact you before now, after Lindsey Fulcher’s suggestion. We had Archaeologists and students from Birkbeck come watch a bronze pouring and discussions with them about making a small I think Middle Bronze Age ” sickle” , so far without result. I am a sculptor myself though I don’t take much time to make things, and we restore artifacts at the foundry , mostly Victorian. I usually try to strike while the iron is hot, but in the case of writing to you I have delayed quite a bit. So it would be very interesting for us at the foundry if you wanted to cast something or collaborate in some way.
